The Internet is changing the face of healthcare in many nations and is likely to eventually influence health and healtcare worldwide.
Dave Gustafson's presentation will review the evolution of the Internet as a system for delivering health information and support. He will discuss the potentials and pitfalls of these systems as they relate to diverse populations using some of his own work with the CHESS (Comprehensive health enhancement support system) system as an example. He will summarize what is known about the penetration of these systems and will examine the breadth and depth of the Digital Divide. He will review what is known about the acceptance, use and impact of Information Systems with particular attention being given to their impact on diverse and underserved populations. Recommendations will be made on how the Digital Divide can be closed and what issues need to be addressed in order for Information Systems to achieve their potential for diverse and underserved populations.
