CRICS V in Havana: bigger, broader, and more complete

Get ready to participate in the biggest and most complete edition of the Regional Congress on Health Sciences Information, CRICS V, to be held from April 25 to 27, 2001, in Havana, Cuba. Since the 1990s, this biennial event, promoted by the Pan American Health Organization through BIREME, which is also in charge of the Scientific Committee, has become the prime forum for discussing information and education in Health Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Planned as 3 days of activities, CRICS V will develop a broad and complex panel on the characteristics of information and knowledge in the contemporary health field. The development of new and different resources, organization and improvement of data bases, and novel uses of information by scientists and the general population produce constant lessons and challenges for all professionals involved in the field. The speakers motivating the debate will comprise a unique group of experts, drawn together on the basis of their professional influence and prestige in their respective fields of work, as part of an international panorama.

The last edition of the CRICS series included some 600 participants from Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe. Due to its broad thematic scope and the quality of its guest speakers, this new edition of CRICS hosted in the Cuban capital is expected to draw even more professionals from the field.

Journals and scientific work

Publishing articles in journals has reached unprecedented importance as a basic tool for exchanging information among both scientists and researchers as well as academics and science editors. Particularly in the field of Health, circulation of information has always played a vital role, fed by highly specialized publications with excellent quality. Yet scientific journals are now entering the even more agile digital world.

Carol Tenopir, from the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee in the United States, will launch the discussion at CRICS V on this historical moment in which publications are changing their appearance. Is this affecting the degree of reading and thus the work of scientists? Can value differences be glimpsed for these scientists in the face of each new communications vehicle? These and other issues will be on the agenda during her talk, on Thursday April 26, 2001, at 2:00 PM in the Palace of Conventions in Havana.

Registration for CRICS V is available at the following address:

Havana, a Landmark for All of Humanity

It was nearly twenty years ago that the historical buildings in the capital of Cuba, and especially in the area known as Habana Vieja (Old Havana), were declared a World Landmark by UNESCO. A walk through this area is a must for visitors to Havana, so it will be more than worth your while to set aside some time from the CRICS 5 program to stroll along the streets of this fascinating old neighborhood. Taking your time, you can enjoy the view of fortresses, palaces, and city squares dating as far back as the 16th century. Some attractions merit special attention, like the Plaza de Armas (Battery Square), with its museum and colonial townhouses; the Cathedral of San Cristóbal de Habana; and the Paseo del Prado.

Take your time and forget your worries during this stroll. Unlike tourist spots elsewhere in the world, there is nobody living or begging on the streets of Havana, and the local crime rate is next to nil. Even if it gets a little late, the atmosphere is tranquil and the local people are friendly and hospitable. So take advantage of your visit.
