Distance Education through the Internet

Can the Internet replace the traditional classroom teaching format? Probably not, although it has contributed extensively to information-sharing. At any rate, new forms of global education have been practiced in recent years, mainly serving poor and geographically isolated areas. Ronald E. Laporte, renowned physician and Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States will discuss his experience with the development of distance training methods in the field of public health.
Laporte's Supercourse will specifically provide an overview of epidemiology and the Internet for students from the medical and health fields from around the world. The system is part of the Global Health Network, an alliance between health and communications experts whose purpose is to build a health information system capable of preventing diseases at the dawn of the new century. Professor Laporte's contribution to the CRICS V plenary sessions will take place on Friday, April 27, starting at 09:00 AM.

Revisiting the librarian's role

The panel discussion on knowledge managers will include an analysis of new professional challenges for those in charge of administering health data. Library professionals are the intermediaries in this process. They are in charge of filtering information from the moment it flows into the system until it is made available to the reader public.
Derek Law, Director of Information Strategy and Libraries at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, will discuss this topic in the plenary beginning at 2:00 PM on April 27.

Educational Tutorials

As occurs traditionally in the special parallel activities program in CRICS, various courses will be given in tandem with the main event. They will be available to all interested and registered participants.
The tutorials are excellent activities focusing mainly on the introduction to technical issues as well as training and continuing education. The courses are nearly always given in the late afternoon. The instructions are prepared by experts, generally linked directly to the development of various current information systems and methodologies.
Most of the courses are free, but participation is limited. Check the general chart on courses in the Continuing Education area:
