Knowledge as a transforming factor

Can information and knowledge be part of solutions for precarious healthcare services, as well as dealing with ignorance, injustice and prejudice? Some replies will certainly be suggested during the three days of the Conference, outlining new paths - preferably clearly marked - for Latin America and the Caribbean. Fresh doubts will certainly arise, as a natural part of the process. Through its keynote topic, CRICS V intends to enhance understanding of healthcare expertise, seeking effective ways to work towards social equality. This highly-respected event will welcome over twenty of the world's top specialists in this sector from leading institutions in the Healthcare Sciences Information Area all over the world. This will be a unique occasion in terms of both quality and sharing technical expertise - certainly not an event to be missed!

Healthcare decisions

How can the available information and scientific knowledge be used more effectively, from the practical standpoint? From the time when research projects are published through to taking action, when decisions should be implemented, different healthcare methodologies have been implemented and developed. In morning panel on April 26 on the second day of CRICS V will focus on this issue, with a celebrated group of speakers from a wide variety of entities and institutions whose activities bring them into daily contact with this type of questioning. This will be perfect opportunity to share impressive experiences, such as the information initiatives implemented by the Centro Cochrane, CREDES (Centre de Recherche d'Étude et Documentation en Économie de la Santé) and Shared-NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research), as well as a close-up look at the highly successful healthcare system scheme implemented in Cuba. Controversy: public and private information

What are the constraints on healthcare information from the standpoint of people's private lives? Public health researcher and lecturer at Heidelberg University, Germany, Gunther Eysenbach will provide information and offer his personal views to stir up discussions. At a meeting when ethics and access will also be discussed within the panorama of the social administration of knowledge, this young Berliner should certainly introduce some provocative issues. An opera-lover and a great fan of spicy food, Eysenback moves between Medicine and Information Technology with ease and grace, making good use of every advantage while warning about future implications.

Just as a hint about what might be expected from this meeting, his favorite lifestyle quote noted on his personal Web site is attributed to Indira Gandhi:
"My grandfather once told me that there were two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was much less competition." (Indira Gandhi)

Poster session selection

The works submitted for the poster session are already being assessed by the International Selection Committee, with the results expected shortly. The selected presentations will be given at CRICS V during the special sessions that are traditionally devoted to exchanging experiences and presenting results. Divided into categories - electronic and hardcopy - these works will focus on the keynote issues and sub-topics scheduled for the meeting. They will certainly surprise us yet again by the high quality of the material produced by the professionals and institutions in this sector.

Take it easy at Varadero

Has anyone never longed to visit Varadero, the most famous of the many beaches lining the shores of Cuba? Celebrated for over twenty kilometers of fine white sands lapped by the blue waves of the Caribbean, this resort epitomizes the current state of international tourism on the island. Synonymous with comfort, its four and five star hotels offer their guests a wide range of options, from just lazing around to countless recreation activities. Restaurants, nightclubs and golf clubs are scattered strategically throughout this region, framed by ecological reserves where nature is carefully preserved.

Taking a trip to Varadero is easy, as it is located only 120 kilometers from Havana. If you can extend your stay, here's a great tip: go to the Chapelin Marina and take a cruise round the nearby islets, a tropical paradise known locally as the keys (cayos). In addition to bringing back unforgettable memories, there are also some great dive sites.
