Cyberdemocracy, first and foremost Can information and knowledge be part of solutions for precarious healthcare services, as well as dealing with ignorance, injustice and prejudice? Some replies will certainly be suggested during the three days of the Conference, outlining new paths - preferably clearly marked - for Latin America and the Caribbean. Fresh doubts will certainly arise, as a natural part of the process. Through its keynote topic, CRICS V intends to enhance understanding of healthcare expertise, seeking effective ways to work towards social equality. This highly-respected event will welcome over twenty of the world's top specialists in this sector from leading institutions in the Healthcare Sciences Information Area all over the world. This will be a unique occasion in terms of both quality and sharing technical expertise - certainly not an event to be missed!
We are living in a time in which knowledge has
consolidated itself as one of the pillars of society. The implications
of this statement have become exceptionally critical for the field of
Health and its specific issues. Nico Stehr, Professor of the Hanse Center
for Advanced Study in Germany, a member of the first panel discussion
at CRICS V, believes that this new reality requires new points of view,
based not on the need for rapid adaptation in the face of constant technological
changes, but rather on the very nature of the social change we are all
experiencing now. Today's knowledge goes beyond its economic value to
become part of human and social values, creating new values and certainly
establishing conflicts that deserve discussion. http://www.bireme.br/crics5/I/programa.htm
The practical challenge of bioethics Among the lectures on knowledge management at
different levels of society, Fernando Lolas Stepke, Director of the
Regional Program on Bioethics in Chile, will present some of this technical
organization's practical experience with the issue. This program, supported
by PAHO, has been highly active ever since it was set up in 1994 in
Santiago, Chile, with the collaboration of the local government and
the University of Chile. Based on work encompassing the entire Latin
American and Caribbean Region, the program collaborates with public
and private agencies to promote the development and application of appropriate
concepts and procedures with an ethical basis in decisions pertaining
to scientific research, technical and professional training, and health
care in general. For more information on the Regional Program in Bioethics,

As everyone knows, American writer Ernest Hemingway
lived for some twenty years in Cuba. Following his trail is one of the
favorite pastimes of visitors to the island. He used to hang out at
two bars in Havana,: La Bodeguita Del Medio and La Floridita. At La
Bodeguita, in the heart of Old Havana and just yards from the Cathedral,
you can see photographs and autographs on the walls from other famous
habitués, like Pablo Neruda and Salvador Allende. But La Floridita
was really his favorite bar, where he used to meet with his friends,
and which has changed very little since the days when you could bump
into Gary Cooper or Spencer Tracy. http://www.pbs.org/hemingwayadventure/index.html
Pay for your trip to Havana on installment Residents of Brazil have the opportunity to pay
for their entire trip to CRICS V on an installment plan. A travel package
was negotiated between the congress organizers and a tourist agency
specializing in potential participants in this important event. The
possibility of enjoying advantageous conditions was based on the large
number of participants expected from Brazil, a trend confirmed by the
number of Brazilians who have already registered. http://www.bireme.br/crics5/I/representantes.htm
